LO1 - Analysis of website - Twitch.tv

5 Different Purposes of websites:
- Information
- Advertising
- E-Commerce
- Download & Streaming
- Social Media

Download & Streaming - Twitch.tv (http://www.twitch.tv/)

A) Purpose: Twitch serves as a medium to deliver entertainment from a streamer to people. Twitch is more specifically for games but it has some leniency to other content such as creative streams (i.e. art streams). It has several channels for specific games that are currently being watched and each of the views are accounted for even when in separate streams. The main target audience are people above the ages of 17 due to most streamers trying to try and keep the chat a mature area. Each streamer has their own niche which means Twitch itself caters to a mass audience.

B) Visitor Needs: Twitch is a entertainment platform for people to watch streamers on. The reason for people to visit Twitch is the objective of getting entertained or to entertain others. They can do so by selecting a game that is currently being streamed at the time and watch a streamer that is playing that game. Otherwise, they can just go to the channels they already follow. To do that, people are able to make accounts which then allow them to use several features at their disposal.

C) Information Flow/User Experience: The navigation around Twitch is quite simple in that a user is only required to click a few elements before arriving at a channel that provides the kind of entertainment they are looking for. Twitch is not exactly an interactive website apart from being able to interact with the streamer through the chat and being able to join in on what the streamer may be doing.

D) Features: Twitch has several features, which include being able to stream and being able to choose from a series of games that are currently being streamed, both of which you can do with a single account. Having an account means you have access to a followers and following list, a dashboard in which to monitor the user's stream and chat, a simple user homepage in which the user can add information about themselves and their general reason for being on Twitch.

E) Benefits: Twitch is purely an Internet based service (Apart from Twitchcon [Convention]), which is a platform for streamers to stream content to their followers. Twitch gains money through advertisement that is on every channel (Unless the channel is advertisement free) which means the more people that stream and watch on Twitch, the more profit they gain. The twitch player for any streamer can be embedded on any website provided that they permission. Twitch provides a partnership program for streamers who are planning to make money off the streaming business and allow the feature of people subscribing for certain features. Not only do the streamers gain money off that traffic but Twitch also gains a cut of that money.

F) Content: Twitch content has always been delivered by streamers which means games that are currently new will most likely be the most streamed until they return to the games they normally play or until new games come out again. Until Twitch was bought by Amazon, they generally ran more ads on streamers channels. Twitch over time has also had several changes in their stream qualities because they have had different servers set across the world placed to help alleviate the problem of sending streams through smaller servers.

LO1 - Analysis of website - Twitter

5 Different Purposes of websites:
- Information
- Advertising
- E-Commerce
- Download & Streaming
- Social Media
Social Media - Twitter (https://www.twitter.com/)

A) Purpose - Twitter was made as form of citizen journalism and social communication. People can create small messages pertaining a certain subject and people who follow them can post replies of their own, retweet it (something of a quoting system) and share it using other forms of social media. The target audience will more than likely link to the type of tweets a person has but Twitter itself seems to target anyone who has access to internet.

B) Visitor Needs: The reason to visit Twitter is to view tweets, see current trending tweets, create a tweet or reply to a tweet. In short, it is mostly for communications between 2 people with short messages. It provides some form of medium to allow people to share their opinion or to talk about a subject which could could to citizen journalism. Although, most of Twitter consists of people just sharing their everyday life which could be something that other people could relate to.

C) Information Flow/User Experience: Twitter has a rather simple to follow layout where a user is able to find what they are looking for. Things such as trending subject are located in its separate area and recent tweets appear in a linear fashion showing the most recent at the top. It also has a 'New Tweet' system where the user can click it to look at new tweets, otherwise it will update on its own and have a small message talking about tweets since the user was away. Users are able to click another user's name to visit their homepage which allows them to tweet directly to them, send a direct message or to follow them.

D) Features: Twitter has a series of features that give the user the ability to do what they need to do on Twitter. If the user doesn't have an account and it's the first time visiting the website, they are presented with a dynamic homepage with currently trending tweets pertaining certain subjects. They can then either log in or create an account. They are then presented to their own customisable homepage which where they can add their own background to their page, have a profile picture and a small description about them. They may also add a location and the date of time they joined Twitter. On their home page, people who the users have followed will have their tweets appear in a vertical fashion from top to bottom, recent to earlier. There is a home, notifications and messages button at the top right part of the page and a search bar on the right side to search for people and certain tweets and finally a 'Tweet' button.

E) Benefits: Advertisements and promotions can be done on Twitter due to its messaging system. Twitter integrates as a platform for other social media; this brings in more traffic from other platforms on to their website. They have integrated so well that tweeting a YouTube video that someone has liked or posting a vine video can provide more people accessing Twitter instead of the website where it came from. Having more traffic means the promotions and trending subjects will get more attention which in turn, allow Twitter to gain more business through the promotion that they have provided.

F) Content: Twitter hasn't changed in terms of the objective: sending messages and updates in a quickly accessible manner. The layout is a different question in which they have made it so that it's far more clearer and easier to read, making it look appealing to the eyes and making it a little more dynamic by adding small animations on button hovering and lighting up the Reply, Retweet and Favourite buttons.

It will always provide a 24/7 access time (unless due to unforeseen situations) which means it is far more accessible than a physical shop. It uses a service known as Paypal to confirm transactions which means only people who have access to a credit card or a similar form of payment method.

The user interface is quite simplistic and does not require any kind of experience to use apart from clicking links and searching in the search bar. Certain deals will appear on the side which will further influence people to buy more deals. A website like Amazon will most likely change their homepage to suit the current events such as holidays and special events. Not only is this helpful for the customer, but they will also more inclined to buying the suggested items.

The interface of Amazon.co.uk is made to seamlessly blend into people’s browsing habits, as it tailors the suggested item according to what people are more commonly browsing and constantly creates a refined search the more people are constantly browsing through products. Everything is separated into their appropriate departments and a customer could hover over the ‘Shop by Department’ and are presented with a drop down menu presenting the sub-categories in which customers can choose which category they want to browse through. The menu is always presented through the website and with that, the search bar and the rest of the features on the upper most bar is constantly on the webpage which allows for browsing continuity.

E) Benefits: The Amazon website provides benefits such as having to only manage their stocks and their website which means it will cheaper in terms of management. It also provides a platform for third party sellers, which means that Amazon is more than likely getting paid by those third party sellers. People can order on Amazon with or without an account and both will provide the customer a suggestions list and certain types of deals and promotions. Not only does this provide an extra service for people but it also means that people who don’t have an account are more incited to create an account to use the websites features such as wish lists and a feature that Amazon provides: ‘Amazon Prime’. Amazon Prime gives people free content (subjective and tends to change) and a 1-day delivery service.

F) Content: Amazon has not changed much apart from layout. Content wise, products have changed over time according to what is being made in the current year and any other popular on demand products. Its main objective of selling products has not changed the websites content very much apart from variety.

LO1 - Analysis of website - Wikipedia

5 Different Purposes of websites:
- Information
- Advertising
- E-Commerce
- Download & Streaming
- Social Media

Information - Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page)
A) Purpose: Wikipedia provides factual information with almost every form of subject. Each of the information given has been cited and given evidence. It allows people to search up a certain subject which will have information written about it. Considering it is basically an ever expanding and enlarging encyclopedia, it will provide a myriad of information which means the target audience will range from young students to the elderly which is considered the mass audience.

B) Visitor Needs: People will be visiting Wikipedia with the objective of trying to find information about certain things. This is provided through several means from hyperlinked words within information, navigation links on the left hand side of the page (Main Page, Contents, Featured content etc.), languages selection and a search bar on the top right. The information pertaining a chosen subject is presented with a generally summarized form at the top of the page along with the name of the subject. The rest of the information is explained towards the bottom of the page such as the explanation of the origin, the time it was found, citations, similar things to the subject but this is not necessarily the same for all subjects as some could be explained differently.

C) Information Flow/User Experience: The website is laid out in a rather extremely easy to use form which allows people to navigate around the website. The text is always kept black so that the hyperlinks that appear in blue appear more clearly. The site also has similar subjects at the bottom to suggest finding more information through that and it will usually follow the same theme of the original search. There is also an option to turn the page into a PDF file for easy access to printing instead of having to copy the entire page.

D) Features: Wikipedia contains several elements that allow a user to navigate around the website through it's hyperlinked keywords, search bar, navigation bar on the left hand side and it even has a mobile version of the website. Apart from the search bar, the main navigational tool that's more commonly used is the hyperlinked words which will lead to more information regarding the chosen subject. Apart from these, Wikipedia itself is simplistic at best, providing easy navigation with little effort and featuring as much information possible. Another example of a feature would be the summary box that's in most wiki pages; It summarizes the main points of the subject in a small box on the page. The page of a subject will be in a certain layout as each page in Wikipedia tends to follow a template to make sure that the information is set out and is easy to pick out from.

E) Benefits: Wikipedia is a very community based website which means that information that is being constantly fed and changed in the website is very much people who will have researched elsewhere, have some experience with or have prior knowledge to it. Eventually, with all the information being added, there will be a pattern of certain information and the information will begin to lead to facts. Information sharing was the main objective of the creation of Wikipedia.

F) Content: Wikipedia is an ever constantly expanding open encyclopedia with content being updated constantly as it is purely an information based website. Although, they have adapted to allow easy access and navigation on phones for example. Since the start of Wikipedia, they have been gaining more and more information translated in to various languages to provide more information for non-native English speakers and readers.
