Social Media - Twitter (https://www.twitter.com/)
A) Purpose - Twitter was made as form of citizen journalism and social communication. People can create small messages pertaining a certain subject and people who follow them can post replies of their own, retweet it (something of a quoting system) and share it using other forms of social media. The target audience will more than likely link to the type of tweets a person has but Twitter itself seems to target anyone who has access to internet.
B) Visitor Needs: The reason to visit Twitter is to view tweets, see current trending tweets, create a tweet or reply to a tweet. In short, it is mostly for communications between 2 people with short messages. It provides some form of medium to allow people to share their opinion or to talk about a subject which could could to citizen journalism. Although, most of Twitter consists of people just sharing their everyday life which could be something that other people could relate to.
C) Information Flow/User Experience: Twitter has a rather simple to follow layout where a user is able to find what they are looking for. Things such as trending subject are located in its separate area and recent tweets appear in a linear fashion showing the most recent at the top. It also has a 'New Tweet' system where the user can click it to look at new tweets, otherwise it will update on its own and have a small message talking about tweets since the user was away. Users are able to click another user's name to visit their homepage which allows them to tweet directly to them, send a direct message or to follow them.
D) Features: Twitter has a series of features that give the user the ability to do what they need to do on Twitter. If the user doesn't have an account and it's the first time visiting the website, they are presented with a dynamic homepage with currently trending tweets pertaining certain subjects. They can then either log in or create an account. They are then presented to their own customisable homepage which where they can add their own background to their page, have a profile picture and a small description about them. They may also add a location and the date of time they joined Twitter. On their home page, people who the users have followed will have their tweets appear in a vertical fashion from top to bottom, recent to earlier. There is a home, notifications and messages button at the top right part of the page and a search bar on the right side to search for people and certain tweets and finally a 'Tweet' button.
E) Benefits: Advertisements and promotions can be done on Twitter due to its messaging system. Twitter integrates as a platform for other social media; this brings in more traffic from other platforms on to their website. They have integrated so well that tweeting a YouTube video that someone has liked or posting a vine video can provide more people accessing Twitter instead of the website where it came from. Having more traffic means the promotions and trending subjects will get more attention which in turn, allow Twitter to gain more business through the promotion that they have provided.
F) Content: Twitter hasn't changed in terms of the objective: sending messages and updates in a quickly accessible manner. The layout is a different question in which they have made it so that it's far more clearer and easier to read, making it look appealing to the eyes and making it a little more dynamic by adding small animations on button hovering and lighting up the Reply, Retweet and Favourite buttons.
